According to Reporters Without Borders’ annual report published last month, 78 female journalists were behind bars globally, 18 of them in Iran. Iran was the top jailer of women journalists after China, with a difference of only one prisoner.

Iran has been gripped by nationwide protests demanding more freedoms and women’s rights since the September death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of morality police.

The authorities have unleashed a bloody crackdown on the protests and imposed Internet blackouts across the country, restrictions on search engines and interferences in social media activity.

Journalists have been prevented from doing their jobs by their own editors as well as Islamic Republic officials.
