Luxembourg Resident Said To Have Been Sentenced To Death In Iran

Iranwire – Luxembourg’s Foreign Ministry says that according to available information, a resident of the country of Iranian descent has been arrested in Iran and sentenced to death amid a deadly crackdown on nationwide protests.

Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn spoke on the phone with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir- Abdollahian, to discuss the case and the situation in the country, the ministry said in a statement on December 22.

The statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry regarding the conversation does not mention the Luxembourg resident said to face execution.

Iran has been rocked by protests since the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died after being detained by the morality police. The protests have since morphed into one of the most serious challenges to the theocracy installed by the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Security forces have violently cracked down on the demonstrations, killing at least 469 people, including 63 children, according to one human rights group.

At least 18,000 others have been detained. Dozens have been handed capital punishment or are facing charges that carry a death sentence. Iran carried out the first two executions earlier this month, triggering international condemnation.

The European Union, the United States and other countries have imposed sanctions on Iranian individuals and entities for their roles in the bloody crackdown.

Luxembourg’s statement said that Asselborn “supports all ongoing efforts, at the level of the European Union and EU Member States, to plead in favor of the Iranian demonstrators who are risking their lives to obtain respect for their fundamental rights, and in particular in favor of those who have been sentenced to death.”

“Luxembourg is opposed to the death penalty, a cruel and inhuman punishment, in all circumstances and without exception,” it added.
