Iranwire – Prominent Iranian activist Hossein Ronaghi’s life is in danger as his Evin Prison hunger strike hits 47 days, his family have told IranWire.
“Hossein’s life is in danger. Hossein is ill and has already lost his left kidney,” Ahmad Ronaghai, his father said. “And it has been determined that Hossein’s right kidney is now 40% damaged.”
Ahmad Ronaghi was transferred to hospital last week after suffering a heart attack outside Evin, in Tehran, where his son is being held. He was later discharged from the hospital.
“I urgently request the authorities to treat him,” Ahmad Ronaghi added. “If the national authorities and Evin Prison officials ignore Hossein’s health, they are responsible for his life.”
Hossein Ronaghi was arrested in late September during the ongoing wave of protests rocking the country over the death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, while in custody of morality police. He had been using Twitter to report on the protests, the brutal crackdown by the security services, and internet disruptions, among other issues.
Hossein’s brother, Hassan, said on October 14 that officials were keeping his brother “in prison without his medicine, with broken legs and a sick body while he is vomiting blood.”
Ronaghi has been imprisoned several times since the 2009 Green Movement protests, largely in relation to his activism against internet censorship in Iran.
