Kurdish political prisoner deprived of medical leave despite serious condition

Iran-HRM – Nearly 800 days after Kurdish political prisoner Zeinab Jalalian was banished to Yazd prison she has been deprived of the right to visit her family and lawyer. She has also been denied medical care.

According to a source from Iran, “about 20 days ago, Ms. Jalalian’s elderly parents went from a long distance from Mako – Dim Qashlaq village to Yazd prison, but they were not allowed to visit their daughter.”

The source said: “Zeinab Jalalian is in poor health condition, and she is still denied the right to access medical treatment, being sent to a hospital outside the prison, visit her family, and lawyer.”

The source added: “The prison doctor has emphasized that Zainab Jalalian should be sent to a hospital outside the prison for urgent treatment, but the prison agents prevent her transfer to hospital by the order of the Ministry of Intelligence.”

“The status of her case is unclear,” the source added. “After (her lawyer) Amirsalar Davoodi was imprisoned, Mr. Mostafa Nili became Ms. Jalalian’s lawyer, but before he could do anything, Mr. Nili was also sentenced to prison and will probably go to jail soon.”

The Kurdish political activist is suffering from physical ailments such as pterygium, kidney problems, and gastrointestinal diseases.

Her health issues have been exacerbated by the lack of adequate medical treatment during the past 15 years of her incarceration.

Arrested in 2007, Jalalian is serving a life sentence for alleged membership in the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (known as PJAK).

She was sentenced to death in 2009 on the charge of Moharebeh through “membership in PJAK.” The verdict was commuted to life in prison in 2011.

Ministry of Intelligence agents have pressured the Kurdish woman by deliberately denying her health care to coerce her into providing a videotaped “confession”.

In 2016, Ministry of Intelligence agents told Zeinab Jalalian that she would be allowed to go on furlough if she agreed to provide a false “confession” in front of a camera.

Kurdish political prisoner Zeinab Jalalian was abruptly relocated from Kermanshah Prison to the Prison of Yazd on November 9, 2020. The security guards did not offer any explanation. The relocation was the fourth time Zeinab Jalalian was relocated from one prison to another in six months.
