Conflicting Reports of Fatalities in Chemical Factory Explosion

Iranwire – A leak from an ammonium tank in a Fars province chemical factory on Monday night caused a massive explosion that led to scores of injuries, according to state TV.

The factory in Firouzabad had only opened its doors in 2020

The blast yesterday night took place in the southern city of Firouzabad. According to the IRIB, 133 people, mostly workers at the plant, were taken to local hospitals. The state broadcaster claimed 114 were later released after treatment and there had been no fatalities.

The Twitter account 1500tasvir, however, which documents protests and other live incidents in Iran as recorded on social media, reports that by Tuesday morning there had been 70 deaths at Shiraz Hospital.

The injured were taken to at least three different facilities and oxygen was reported to be running short in some of them. A person described as a medical staff member in Shiraz told 1500tasvir some of the casualties had been “frozen”, others killed by sodium nitrite entering their lungs.
