Iranian political prisoner with cancer denied medical treatment

Iran-HRM – The health of a political prisoner with cancer is rapidly deteriorating as the authorities have stopped his lifesaving treatment.

political prisoner Kasra Bani Amerian

The treatment of Kasra Bani Amerian, a political prisoner with has been stopped in Evin Prison.

The authorities have deprived him of access to physiotherapy and other urgent medical treatment.

Kasra Bani Amerian suffered from a muscle problem in his ankle called “neuropathy” after chemotherapy, which prevented him from walking. If his treatment is delayed, he will face irreparable health damage.

According to an informed source: “Kasra Bani Amerian’s doctors ordered him to be continuously treated and given physiotherapy, but his treatment has been stopped and no answer was given to him and his other cellmates who follow up on his medical condition.

“According to doctors, stopping his treatment has serious consequences for him,” the source said.

Mr. Bani-Amarian urgently needs medicines to protect his immune system, but these medicines are not given to him in prison.

The 26-year-old political prisoner has undergone chemotherapy before his arrest. He should be monitored by a specialist and receive medical treatment.

But the judicial authorities have prevented his release, depriving him of the minimum necessary care and even the medications he urgently needs.

Bani Amerian’s family has tried, without success, to get a compassionate release due to his medical conditions.

Withholding medical treatment is a common tactic used by Iranian authorities to put pressure on political prisoners.

Amnesty International, United Nations Experts, and other human rights organizations have documented numerous occasions on which authorities deprived prisoners in Iran of needed care.

While the actual number is unknown, at least three political prisoners died as a result of inadequate medical treatment or ill-treatment in Iran in 2021 including Adel Kianpour, Sasan Niknafs, and Behman Mahjoubi.
