Iranwire – Iran’s deputy minister of cooperatives, labor and social welfare has announced that the country records 13,000 work-related accidents every year, of which 700 to 800 are fatal.
If correct, this would mean around three Iranians per 100,000 in formal employment are killed at work each year: a relatively high ratio compared other countries, even before the informal sector is taken into account. Across the European Union, 1.7 deaths per 100,000 people in work were recorded in 2018. Iran’s ratio is comparable to those of Bulgaria and Romania.
In comments first reported on Monday, November 15, Minister Ali Hossein Raiatifard said there was an “urgent” need to upgrade both equipment and technical know-how in many of Iran’s industries to better improve safety in the workplace. “Workplace safety needs monitoring,” he said. “The system of governance should be them continuously.”
Also on Monday, ILNA news agency reported on the recent deaths of three workers in the cities of Asaluyeh in Bushehr, and Aran o Bidgol in Isfahan. Two others, it said, had suffered serious injuries.
The minister’s comments also just as the director-general of Kermanshah’s Legal Medicine Organization said there had been an increase in local work-related deaths in the first seven months of the Persian year 1400. Speaking to Tasnim News Agency, Salim Khani said 24 people – 23 men and one woman – were known to have lost their lives since March.
The Organization also recorded 347 injuries from workplace-related accidents. The most common cause of death, accounting for 15 of the 24 so far recorded, Khani said, was falling from a height, followed by being struck with heavy objects, electric shocks and burns.
