Medical Student’s Death Sparks Fresh Fears Over Working Conditions

Iranwire – A young doctor-in-training has died of coronavirus in Tehran, reigniting concerns about the standard of living for medical students and the harsh conditions under which they work.

Monireh Foroughi, a second-year student in obstetrics and gynecology at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, had been working as resident at Taleghani Hospital since the beginning of October. The university announced her death on its Instagram page.

Foroughi is the eleventh medical student to die this year in Iran. Several of the deaths were suicides, prompting students to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #tellusaboutresidency. Following the announcement of Foroughi’s death, there was speculation that she too had committed suicide and that the coronavirus verdict was a cover-up by university officials.

Like elsewhere in the world, doctors and medical students in Iran have come under increased pressure throughout the pandemic.
