Iran’s Dam Water Reserves Decrease by Half in a Year

Iranwire – Iran’s state-affiliated Tasnim News Agency, citing the latest statistics of Iran Water Resources Management Company, reports a massive 47 percent decrease in the country’s dam water reserves compared to last year.

According to Tasnim, from the beginning of the current calendar year to August 20, 2021, the amount of water inflow to the dams’ reservoirs was 28.6 billion cubic meters, while in the same period last year, this stood at 54.2bn cubic meters.

On August 20 itself, the available water reserves in dams across Iran was said to be 21.5 billion cubic meters. On the same day last year, the figure was reportedly 30.8bn.

Tasnim also alleged that at the time of writing, 57 percent of all of Iran’s water reservoirs, large and small, were completely empty.

The water crisis in Iran sparked widespread street protests in Khuzestan and several other provinces in July this year. More than 10 demonstrators and passers-by, including a teenage boy, were killed by security forces while hundreds more were jailed.
