Iranwire – A resident of the city of Amol in Mazandaran province has been arrested for calling on Instagram and Twitter for a boycott of the Iranian presidential election.
Siavash Emami was arrested by intelligence agents on June 15, 2021 on the orders of the Revolutionary Court of Nur city.
According to activists, he was charged with “conspiracy to act against national security” and “propaganda against the regime”.
He had issued an online call to his fellow citizens not to vote in the elections on Friday, June 18, which saw ultraconservative judge Ebrahim Raisi easily win the presidency.
The court is understood to have set Emami’s bail at 500 million tomans ($22,700): an amount he cannot afford.
Siavash Emami, who is currently still in custody, has been arrested several times by the province’s security forces since 2009.
His recent detention comes amid fresh crackdowns on Iranian social media users in the past few months. Scores of citizens were also arrested in the course of the election and for protesting in the immediate aftermath.
