Iran: Six Prisoners Transferred for Execution on Drug-related Charges

Iran Human Rights (IHR) – At least six prisoners on death row for drug-related charges, were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions in Urmia Central Prison hours ago. The families of the prisoners gathered in protest outside the prison after paying their last visits.

According to Iran Human Rights, at least six male men were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions after seeing their families for the last time. The transfer of the detainees, all sentenced to death on drug-related charges, was met with protests by their families outside the prison gates.

The men’s identities have been established as: Sadegh Mohi, Mohammad Karim Mohammadpour, Sultan Amiri, Ahad Nematvand, Ebrahim Nasirzadeh and Mostafa Nasirkhah.

Five of the prisoners were transferred from Ward 15 and one from Ward 3-6 to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions.

It has been almost four years since an Article was added to the Anti-Narcotics Law in 2017 to limit death sentences specifically and provide a general degree of reprieve in some cases. However, while the numbers reduced that year, the death penalty is still being used in drug-related cases.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020.
