Sixty Thousand Iranian Boys Aged Under 18 are Married

Iranwire – More than 60,000 Iranian males aged 10 to 18 are married, according to population studies recently cited in Iranian media.

On Wednesday, February 24, the demographer Shahla Kazemipour told ISNA news agencythat according to the 2016 census, “about 1.2 percent of 10- to 14-year-old boys, 2.3 percent of 15- to 19-year-old boys, and  about 2 percent of 10-18-year-old boys – 60,000 – are married.”

She went on to observe that according to the official statistics, the largest number of marriages involving boys under the age of 18 were taking place in the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan, North Khorasan, Razavi Khorasan and Kerman.

The same ISNA news report stated that about 10 percent of boys aged under 18 nationwide are in employment. Another 88 percent are reportedly in school and about two percent are neither studying nor working.

According to the report, out of the approximately 43 million males in Iran, 10.5 million are aged under 15, 30 million are aged 15 to 64 and about 3 million are aged 65 and above.

Overall, the report stated, 21 million Iranian adult males are married. Another 350,000 are widowed, 400,000 are single after a divorce, and 12 million have not married.
