Inmate dies of Covid-19 in Central Prison of Urmia

Iran-HRM – Inmate dies in Urmia Prison due to Coronavirus. Akbar Mostafa died on Sun. Dec. 27 in the dispensary of the Central Prison of Urmia from COVID-19 in the absence of necessary and urgent medical care.

Inmates in the Central Prison of Urmia are deprived of the minimum medical and health resources. With the advent of winter, they are at risk of contracting various infectious diseases in addition to coronavirus.

There were reports in November that 15 prisoners in Ward 14 of this prison had contracted the virus. They were detained among 114 other prisoners in this war.

Another 8 inmates were infected in Moshavereh Ward, but only two of them were taken to civic hospitals.

The doctors of the Central Prison of Urmia are not proficient and cannot make the right diagnosis. They visit prisoners for only a couple of hours and leave the prison.

Inmates complain of the low quality of food and hygiene in this prison. They say they do not have enough clothes, but prison authorities do not accept anything from their families. If they do, they allow only one out of four pieces of clothing that families bring. Prison guards sell cellphones to prisoners but later confiscate them.
