Unannounced Executions Are Continued in Iran

Iran Human Rights (IHR) – IHR can confirm an execution was carried out on March 9 at the central prison of Zanjan city, Iran. The execution has not been announced by the authorities so far. 

According to IHR sources, death-row prisoner Sirous Assadi was executed at Zanjan prison, 300 km north-west of the capital, Tehran.

“Sirous was arrested for murdering a barber during a fight over financial issues,” a well-informed source told IHR. He was sentenced to qisas (retribution in-kind) by an Iranian court.

According to IHR’s Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, 70% of all executions carried out in the 2019 report (196 out of 280) were not announced by the authorities.
