Iran: Imprisoned Activist Saeed Shirzad Has Been Denied Medical Treatment

Iran Human Rights (IHR) – Iranian authorities have repeatedly denied sending imprisoned civil rights activist Saeed Shirzad to a hospital for medical treatment. He was scheduled for eye surgery on September 15.

Imprisoned child rights activist Saeed Shirzad suffers from multiple health problems acquired while in prison, including eye disease. Saeed’s sister Fatemeh Shirzad announced on her Twitter account that Saeed has not been sent to a medical center to attend an eye surgery appointment. “After several months of our requests and follow-ups, Saeed had been given appointment for an eye surgery earlier today and the inspectors had agreed to send him to the hospital. Despite making the payments for medical fees in advance, Saeed was not sent to the hospital for an unknown reason. No one informed us about the possible reasons for denying him medical care”, she twitted on September 15.

A well-informed source told IHR, “Saeed refused the prison guards’ illegal demand to wear the prison outfit as a condition to send him to the hospital.”
Saeed Shirzad was arrested on June 2, 2014, at his workplace in the Iranian city of Tabriz by the security forces. He was sentenced to five years imprisonment for “gathering and conspiring against national security”. Following his participation in a protest in prison, he received an additional 6 months jail term. He was beaten by security guards several times and had been on hunger to protest the violation of prisoners’ rights.
Saeed is supposed to be released on October 6, 2020.
