U.S. Says ‘Only Solution’ Is A New Deal Addressing Iran’s Threats

Radiofarda – U.S. State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus has said that the only solution to tensions with Iran is “a new and better deal that addresses the full scope of Iran’s threats.”

Speaking at her daily briefing, Ortagus referred to what she said were new threatening remarks by Iran’s Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and she quipped, “We aren’t impressed”.

“It can either behave like a normal nation or watch its economy crumble. Iran’s recent threat to cease performing key nuclear commitments under the JCPOA is a big step in the wrong direction”, she said.

After the Trump administration announced a tightening of its sanctions on Iran’s oil exports in early May, Iran demanded that other signatories of the 2015 nuclear deal carry out their commitments by helping Iran in maintaining trade. Otherwise, it threatened to reduce its implementation of the nuclear agreement by boosting uranium enrichment, among other moves.

The Sate Department spokesperson also referred to the Tehran visit of German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and the upcoming visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe saying, “There is no daylight between us and our allies on the objective of denying Iran the ability to ever acquire a nuclear weapon.”

Ortagus underlined that the twelve demands from Iran the U.S. announced in May 2018 are the result of Iran’s “threats”, but also emphasized that Washington is ready to talk, adding, “Iran’s leaders know how to reach us.”
