Radiofarda – Iran’s first vice president in a speech on Tuesday May 28 expressed hope that the United States will “stop pressuring” Iran, as sanctions have made “conditions worse” in the country.
Es’haq Jahangiri’s remarks might be a reaction to President Donald Trump’s latest statements about not wanting regime change and his willingness to negotiate with Iran.
“I really believe that Iran would like to make a deal, and I think that’s very smart of them, and I think that’s a possibility to happen,” Trump said during a news conference with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Monday.
“It has a chance to be a great country with the same leadership,” Trump said. “We aren’t looking for regime change – I just want to make that clear. We are looking for no nuclear weapons.”
In his speech Jahangiri said, “When Americans threaten and show off their military power… and when they talk about dialogue and negotiations, they are in contradiction”.
But he also expressed hope for “Americans to come to reason and stop their pressures, allowing our country to continue its development path and for our region to be secure”.
Jahangiri added that U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil exports have made conditions more difficult this year and its is possible “to face limitations in our budget”.
One day earlier, Jahangiri announced that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has approved the withdrawal of one billion dollars from the country’s reserve fund.
