Iranian Lawyer Can face Heavy Prison Sentence for Expressing His Opinion

IHR once again strongly condemns his arrest and urges the international community to react to the systematic crackdown on Iranian lawyers.

Amirsalar Davoudi was arrested by the Iranian Judiciary on November 20, 2018. He was the defense attorney of several political and civil activists as well as Baha’i minorities in Iran.
According to IHR sources, Davoudi is accused of “Gathering and collusion, spreading false information, insulting Iranian officials, insulting the Supreme Leader, and propaganda against the system” in one legal case and in another case, accused of “forming a group to overthrow the political system, and cooperating with the enemy government of the United States of America.” These charges are based on Davoudi’s expression of opinion on social media or giving interviews to Farsi media outside Iran.
His lawyer, Vahid Moshkani Farahani, told IHR: “He might face 30 years of imprisonment for the first case, and 10 years for each of the charges mentioned in the second case.” Based on Article 134, if a defendant is faced with more than one charges, the charge with the highest penalty will be taken into account. According to Vahid Moshkani Farahani, if the court found Davoudi guilty of the aforementioned charges, he should serve around 15 years of imprisonment.
“He is neither in solitary confinement nor in a public ward. He is kept in a cell with three other prisoners. Davoudi’s meetings with his family are limited. I could visit him only once, I have read his files and waiting for branch 15 [of Tehran Revolutionary Courts] to inform me about the schedule of the trial,” Farahani emphasised.
