Iran Issues Verdict On Detained U.S. veteran

Radiofarda – A verdict has been issued in the court case of a US navy veteran arrested in Iran last year on security and other charges, the official news agency IRNA reported Monday.

“This case has both private and public plaintiffs… There are security charges in the case,” Gholamali Sadeghi, prosecutor for the city of Mashad, told IRNA, without disclosing the ruling.

Michael White, 46, from Imperial Beach, California, was arrested in July after visiting his girlfriend in Mashhad, northeast Iran, his mother told The New York Times.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi confirmed White’s arrest on January 9 and said “the US government was informed of this in the first days of the arrest through the US interests section in Tehran”.

He “strongly denied” US media reports that White was being held in poor conditions.

White is one of at least four US citizens, two of them of Iranian descent, detained in Iran.

US interests in Iran are represented by the Swiss embassy in Tehran, as the two countries have not had diplomatic relations since 1980.

Ties deteriorated sharply last year when US President Donald Trump withdrew from an international accord on Iran’s nuclear programme and reimposed sanctions.
