A year ago, Ahmad Maula, also known as Ahmad Nisi, who was one the founders and leaders of the Arab group was gunned down in the Hague by unknown assailants. It was assumed that Iran had been behind the attack.

The group first appeared in 1997 and declared its goal the liberation of Iran’s south-western province of Khuzestan, the port of Bushehr, Hormozgan province in the south and islands under the sovereignty of Iran in the Persian Gulf.

While ASMLA had targeted Islamic Republic officials several times in the past, the deadliest attack it took responsibility for happened on September 22 in Ahvaz, when gunmen opened fire on a military parade, killing 25 people.

Iran vowed revenge at the time and conducted a missile strike at a target in Syria, where it said the group responsible for the Ahvaz had a base of operations.
