Ruhani Gives Green Light For Allowing Iranian Women To Attend Football Matches

Radiofarda – Iranian news agency ISNA reported on Monday that Ruhani has given the green light for allowing Iranian women to attend football matches. This comes after Ruhani delivered the news in a note to Sports Minister Masoud Soltanifar, who then asked the president how the Ministry for Sport should proceed with this.

Iran’s ultra-conservative clergy previously opposed women being in football stadiums alongside passionate male fans shouting epigrammatic slogans.

An ‘absolute ban’ is no longer rational – says a spokesman for Iran’s Guardian Council – a twelve member body that has considerable power in the country.

“If there should be a way then it should be no problem to find a solution (to the stadium ban)”, Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei says, according to YJC – a state news portal.

Previously proposals for stands exclusively for families and women have been rejected by the clergy, however years of protests – the most recent of which unfolded in front of an international audience as Iran played at the World Cup in Russia – seem to have worked at last.
