Radiofarda – A member of the Iranian parliament says that in the past one year twenty cars belonging to MPs have been stolen in Tehran.
Mohammad Hassannezhad told a state TV website that most of these vehicles were stolen in the western part of the city. Many Iranian MPs live in parliament housing units in western Tehran.
He revealed that his own car was stolen a year ago and it had a special holographic permit sticker allowing the car to enter the parliamentary compound.
Hassannezhad said that none of the stolen cars have been found and all had a similar sticker. He voiced concern that if any of these vehicles “were filled with explosives and driven into the parliament compound, who would be accountable?”
In June 2017, Iran’s parliament building and the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic, ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeni, were attacked by armed intruders. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the terror attack that killed at least 17 people and wounded more than 50 others.
After this event, which shocked Iran, the head of parliament’s security was replaced amid a lot of criticism about the way the security team had operated. Many influential MPs later said that security had improved for the compound.
Police and security organs have not yet responded to Hassannezhad’s claims about stolen vehicles.
