Iran Threatens To Stop Implementing The Nuclear Deal

Radiofarda – Iran say it will stop implementing the landmark 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) if all member states, international organizations, and the remaining parties to the agreement cannot guarantee its benefits for Iran.

“There shall be no doubt that if, after the exhaustion of available remedies, rights and benefits of the Iranian people are not fully guaranteed, it is Iran’s unquestionable right — recognized also under the JCPOA and Security Council resolution 2231 (2015) — to take appropriate actions and to treat the re-imposition of nuclear-related sanctions by the United States ‘as grounds to cease performing its commitments under the JCPOA in whole or in part’,” a statement released by the Iran’s mission to the UN in New York said on Thursday, June 28.

The press release claims that the Security Council meeting on Wednesday demonstrated Washington’s “isolation” with regard to the JCPOA and “highlighted once again the international community’s full support for diplomacy and multilateralism over unilateralism and pressure.”

Argiung that Iran has fulfilled its obligations under the agreement and that has been verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), “the United States has consistently failed — since ‘implementation day’, and particularly after the assumption of office by President Trump — to abide by its commitments under the JCPOA”, the statement reads.

The press release calls the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA “unlawful” which renders “non-compliance with the Security Council resolution 2231 (2015)” and urges that Washington must be held accountable for its action.

President Trump who believed that the nuclear agreement was the “worst deal” his country has ever made, announced on May 8 that his administration was not going to abide by the agreement anymore and would impose the “highest level” of economic sanctions on Iran.

Since then, Iran’s national currency started an unprecedented free fall which has led to wide-spread strikes and protests by Iranian merchants in several cities in recent days.

A senior State Department official said on Tuesday that U.S. has told countries to cut all imports of Iranian oil from November and is unlikely to offer any exemptions, as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on allies to cut off funding to Iran.

Reacting to this statement, an Iranian oil official told the semi-official Tasnim news agency on Wednesday that removing Iranian oil from the global market by November was impossible.

“Iran exports a total of 2.5 million barrels per day of crude and condensate and eliminating it easily and in a period of a few months is impossible,” the official said.
