Radiofarda – The top U.N disarmament officials made statements in support of the Iran nuclear deal on Tuesday at a U.N nuclear non-proliferation conference in Geneva.
Izumi Nakamitsu the U.N High Representative For Disarmament Affairs said that, “The Secretary-General remains convinced that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) continues to be the best way to ensure the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.”
She was countered by the United States Non-proliferation envoy Christopher Ford who pointed out the complicated dealings of the international community with Iran saying, “A country that for years unlawfully and secretly sought to develop nuclear weapons, suspended its weaponisation work only when confronted by potentially dire consequences continued to enrich uranium in violation of U.N. Security Council requirements.”
The conference will last until May 4 and its goal support the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons also know as the the NPT.
Iran signed the NPT on July 1st 1968 and ratified it in February of 1970. The goal of this U.N conference is to “consider principles, objectives and ways in order to promote the full implementation of the Treaty.”
The European Union Disarmament Envoy Jacek Bylica reflected on the E.U’s support for the treaty saying, “It is in our common interest to preserve a deal that strengthens the global non-proliferation regime, contributes positively to regional and international peace and security and provides the international community with necessary assurances on the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.”
However, he also referred to Iran’s controversial ballistic missile program saying, “We call on Iran to promptly ratify the additional protocol and we also call on Iran to refrain from ballistic missile launches that are inconsistent with U.N. SCR 2241.”
The IAEA representative also spoke at the opening of the conference pointing out Iran’s obligations under the JCPOA “”In short, Iran is now subject to the world’s most robust nuclear verification regime and Iran is implementing its nuclear related commitments under the JCPOA.”
