Suspicious Death of a Detainee in Evin Prison- IHR Calls For International Investigations

Iran Human Rights –  Sina Qanbari, 23, one of the people who were arrested during the recent protests in Tehran died in the quarantine ward of Evin Prison on January 6. The official authorities said that the cause of death was suicide.

The Committee for Pursuing the Detainees of Nationwide Protests announced the suspicious death of Sina Qanbari, 23, on Sunday Jan 7 for the first time. According to the newly-established committee, Sina died in the quarantine ward of Evin Prison for an unknown reason on January 6.

Two members of the Iranian Parliament, Tayyebeh Siyavashi and Mahmoud Sadeqi, confirmed the death of Sina Qanbari and announced that the cause of death was suicide.

Tayyebeh Siavashi commented on this news, “I pursued the matter via the Ministry of Intelligence and the police and I found out that the 22-year-old boy was arrested by the police and sent to the Judiciary.”

Mahmoud Sadeqi, a member of the Parliament from Tehran, also confirmed the death of Sina Qanbari in his interview with Etemad Online, “According to an informed authority, Sina Qanbari was arrested by the police and, as they said, he committed suicide in Evin Prison.”

“Due to ambiguity of the Judiciary, the presence of other parallel security institutions, and the events that followed the protests in 2009, we demand a special fact-finding committee from the United Nations for investigation of the condition of the detainees and finding the truth about the death of dozens of protesters and those responsible for the killings,” said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the director and spokesperson of IHR.

It should be noted that most families of those who were injured, arrested or killed in the recent protests were too afraid to talk to Iran Human Rights (IHR) because of intimidation by the security institutions and lack of knowledge about how to handle these kinds of situations. This can worsen the condition of the detainees and leave the dead unavenged.
