Iranian Olympics gold medalists Sareh Javanmardi and Kianoush Rostami to sell their medals to help the quake victims

PayvandNews – Paralympic Games gold medal winner in shooting Sareh Javanmardi is going to sell her medal to raise money for the victims of Sunday’s earthquake which left at least 500 people dead in Iran.

The 7.3-magnitude quake struck in the remote border area between Iran and Iraq late Sunday.

As of right now, the earthquake has claimed over 500 lives, injured over 7,000, and has left thousands homeless and in need of support.

“I consider it my duty to take a small step to help my beloved fellow compatriots who have suffered as a result of the quake,” Javanmardi said.

Iranian weighlifter Kianoush Rostami, Olympic gold medal winner in Rio 2016, has also said he is going to auction his medal to give the money to the people who were affected by the earthquake.

“My gold medal belongs to my people and I just hand it back to them. I didn’t sleep in the previous nights due to a sorrowful event,” Rostami said.

Rostami set a new world record of 396 kilograms in his 85kg weight class, winning his first Olympic gold medal.

Multiple top Iranian athletes and sports celebrities are planning to contribute to quake victims at an event taking place on Wednesday.
