IHR Condemns Ahmadreza Jalali’s Death Sentence

Iran Human Rights – Ahmad Reza Jalali (Djalali), an Iranian physician and researcher, has been sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court’s Judge Salavati , on the charges of “espionage and collaboration with enemies”.

Iran Human Rights (IHR) strongly condemns the execution of Ahmad Reza Jalali. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the director and spokesperson of IHR said, “Mr. Jalali was tried and sentenced to death at the Revolutionary Court without the minimum standards required for a fair trial. We urge the international community to utterly condemn this sentence and try their best to remove the death sentence giving Mr. Jalali a chance to receive a fair trial. We also urge academic institutions to object to this unjust treatment.”

According to a close source, Dabir Daryabeygi, Ahmad Reza Jalali’s lawyer, told him that his death sentence had been issued by Judge Salavati at branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran on Saturday. He also said that Mr. Jalali was convicted of “espionage and collaboration with enemies”. Both the prisoner and his lawyer have appealed against the sentence and requested a retrial from an appeal court.

Ahmad Reza Jalali lived in Sweden since 2009 where he had permanent residence. He did research in the field of crisis management and worked at Karolinska University, in Stockholm.

Being formally invited by Tehran University, Ahmad Reza Jalali traveled to Iran but was arrested by the agents of the Ministry of Intelligence on his way to Karaj on April 24, 2016. He spent three months at the detention center of the Ministry of Intelligence. Now Iranian authorities claim that he is convicted of “espionage and collaboration with enemies”.

In February 2017, IHR reported about Mr. Jalali being threatened by Judge Salavati while he was on hunger strike in the prison.
