Britain Pledges To Help Gulf Countries Counter Iran’s ‘Aggressive Actions’

RFL/RE – British Prime Minister Theresa May says she hopes to deepen defense cooperation with Persian Gulf countries to “push back Iran’s aggressive regional actions.”

“I want to assure you that I am clear-eyed about the threat that Iran poses to the Gulf and to the wider Middle East,” May told the Gulf Cooperation Council in Bahrain on December 7, adding that Britain wanted to “make a more permanent and more enduring commitment to the long-term security of the Gulf.”

“Gulf security is our security,” she told the council, which brings together the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman.

In October 2015, Britain began to construct a naval base in Bahrain — the country’s first new permanent military base in the Middle East in four decades.
