Report: Iran Sentences Saudi Diplomatic Missions Attackers

RFL/RE – Iran has sentenced to prison terms an undisclosed number of people accused of storming Saudi diplomatic missions earlier this year.

Iran’s semiofficial ISNA news agency quoted lawyer Mostafa Shabani as saying on November 4 that some of the defendants were handed sentences of three months or six months in jail, while others were acquitted.

The report did not elaborate.

Earlier this week, Iran’s judiciary website said a court had sentenced 20 suspects and that 146 were detained over the case.

Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran in January after Iranian demonstrators torched Riyadh’s embassy and consulate following Saudi Arabia’s execution of a prominent Shi’ite cleric.

Predominantly Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shi’ite-led Iran are major rivals in the Middle East and support opposing sides in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen.
