Iran ‘smart filters’ 95 million explicit contents on Instagram

PayvandNews – Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, touched upon the protection of cyberspace on social networks and the execution of the ‘smart filtering’ project that has been introduced by Rouhani administration to allow access, albeit restricted, to more social networks that contain explicit content.

“At the start of the project, over 5 per cent of the content transmitting through the infrastructure network was vulgar and obscene,” he said. “After the execution of ‘smart filtering’ last year, 95 million instances of explicit content were identified and blocked. This is while in the past, with all the efforts and measures, only 1.2 million of such content had been identified.”

Azari Jahromi then talked about production of domestic content, adding “the share of domestic content production has increased from 10 percent at the start of Rouhani’s government to over 40 percent. This means 40 percent of content used by Iranian Internet citizens are produced in the country.”

He went on to add, “at the moment, 70 percent of Iraq’s internet import and export, 100 percent of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan’s communications, and 30 percent of Afghanistan’s market are going through Iran.”

“After the nuclear deal, we managed to increase Iran’s international transit in the region up to 5.6 times,” he said. “That is, before the deal, we had 100 Gbps of exchange, but the amount has now reached 560 Gbps.”

The ICT deputy minister further highlighted plans to reach a capacity of 30TB regional transit in the next few years.
