Russia Hosts Syrian, Iranian Ministers As Aleppo Fighting Intensifies

RFL/RE – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has been hosting talks in Moscow with his counterparts from Syria and Iran to discuss the security situation in Syria.

Lavrov said the October 28 meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif is an effort of “like-minded people” to “hammer out a constructive solution” to the Syrian crisis.

He accused Western countries of “trying to distort the meaning of UN Security Council decisions” and encouraging “extremists in their unwillingness to stop their criminal acts.”

Muallem asked Lavrov to convey to Russian President Vladimir Putin the gratitude of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for Russia’s “effective assistance in the fight against terrorism.”

In the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo, antigovernment forces have launched an offensive to break out of an encirclement by government troops.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on October 28 that 15 people had been killed and more than 100 injured by a rebel rocket attack on government-held areas of western Aleppo. The attack involved “hundreds of shells and rockets,” the NGO said.
