washingtonexaminer – Iran is expected to indict a detained U.S. citizen on charges of acting against the country’s national security interests, according to a Foreign Desk report late Wednesday.
The Iranian government claims Gholamreza Shahini, 46, participated in the 2009 Green Revolution and worked with the Voice of America news outlet in order to undermine the government.
The State Department would not confirm or deny Iran’s plans to indict the American Wednesday night.
“The safety and security of U.S. citizens remains our top priority. We continue to use all the means at our disposal to advocate for U.S. citizens who need our assistance overseas,” a State spokesperson said on background. “We have seen reports of the detention in Iran of a person reported to be a U.S. citizen. We are looking into it and beyond that, for privacy reasons, we have nothing further to add.”
